“Text Art” is the simple use of ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) characters to add value in your online communications.

Something like these:

✪ ✣ ✤ ✥ ✦ ✧ ✩ ✫ ✬

✭ ✯ ✰ ✱ ✲ ✳ ❃ ❂ ❁

❀ ✿ ✶ ✴ ❄ ❉ ❋ ❖ ⊹

⊱✿ ✿⊰⊹ ♧ ✿ ♂ ♀ ∞ ☆ ★

❀ ♫ ♬ ♪ ♩ ♪ ❤ 。◕‿◕。 ☀ ツ

ⓛ ⓞ ⓥ ⓔ ♡ ╰ ☆ ╮ ♥ ღ ☼

But wait!  Those aren’t professional – they are ANNOYING!

Annoying

We’ve all seen the crazy use of these symbols.  Elaborate pictures drawn at the bottom of someone’s online message.  Hackers, online wanna-be gangsters, and 13 year old girls are frequent users, but small business owners can use these, too.

Another Tool in the Toolbox

This article will not increase your social media engagement by 20%.  Don’t expect to see sales skyrocket by 10%.  If your social media posts are boring, no text technique is going to change that.

If you are already writing engaging messages and communicating with your potential customers and fans via social media – text characters can be used occasionally to give your post maybe a 2-3% boost.

A small % improvement is not a big deal by itself, but if you utilize something like these techniques through time, you are constantly innovating and trying new things.  Social media success is not a formula to follow – it’s more like an experiment of failures and success.  So here are some experiments (techniques) you can try:

Technique 1 – Call to Action

Many times, you want to encourage an action from your reader.  You might want them to read something, look at something, click on a link, add to cart, like something, follow something, share something, etc . . . many social messages need a call to action.

call to action text arrow

Look at the 6 arrows I added to a post that can’t get much more boring (a tax related topic).  Most people do not want to read about taxes when they are on Facebook, but guess what?  I sell an Etsy Tax Guide Ebook, and I need to help remind Etsy sellers it is available for sale.

Add some arrows to encourage the clicking of a picture or text hyperlink.

Example:  Why not check out my Etsy Tax Guide → Here

Technique 2 – Email List Signups

Email lists are a great way to stay connected with people that are interested in your business.  I consistenly remind Etsy-preneurship readers to join the email list.

email list text graphic

Facebook only sent this message to about 300 people out of 6,700.  Why so few?  It is not an engaging post – duh!  But it is still a useful post for my business.  Out of those 300 people, it gained 4 new email list signups.  4 more people are connected with Etsy-preneurship in an additional way – so that is a win for something that took me 2 minutes to implement.

How much difference did the little envelopes make?  I have no idea, but it wasn’t hard to add.

Example:  ✉  FYI – here is where you can join the Etsy-preneurship email list.

Techniqe 3 – Quotes

Lots of people share quotes on social media.  Many times with graphics, but check out these “extra large, darker and more prominent quote marks.”

Big Quotes text example

These quotes make the message stand out a little more, but they are barely noticeable.  Efficient usage of “text art” should almost be invisible.  If your readers are noticing it in the 0.1 seconds they scan 100’s of other messages on social media, it is distracting.

Notice those two big black circles by the 1911 year in the post above?  Those are distracting.  They really don’t add value.

❝  ❞  ●

Example:  ❝Did you know I have a START HERE area of Etsy-preneurship that I hope everyone views at some point during their time on my website. ❞ – Jason Malinak, Etsy-preneurship

Enhance Readability

Everyone has to read a ton during a day and generally social media is compressing our attention spans.

You can use symbols for bullet points if you have a list.  Use spaces, dashes, punctuation to make text stand out.

Remember the Smiley!

Seriously, smiles work.  :)  If your business is “too professional” to communicate with OTHER HUMAN BEINGS without smiling . . . your brand might be too serious.  Humans smile.  Smile online.  Your customers will notice -even subliminally.

A Few Additional Characters I Think That Might Be Useful For You

Just copy and paste these into your messages sometimes.  Don’t use them all the time.  Keep them as a tool in your communication toolbox.

Remember, this isn’t rocket science, but you could take it to that level.

Note:  The 5th grade boy in me thinks that link above is kinda cool.  If text modifications aren’t your thing – great.  I believe we all need to be intentional in the way we communicate with each other – hokey graphics and all!

Keep it simple.

Keep it professional.

Use sparingly.
